GOALS
Our goal for the Young Women's Mentoring Program is to facilitate opportunities for women (WIA members and from the community) to provide role models for fifth grade girls. Through fun and challenging discussions and activities, the girls develop self-confidence, social skills and an expanded view of career opportunities. The mentoring experience gives working women an opportunity, within a limited time, to present positive role models and to learn from young women about the world of today's youth.
WHO PARTICIPATES
Our mentors are women who want to help a fifth grade girl to become aware of her potential. Mentors are role models who share talents, stories, listening skill and life experiences in a group setting at a local elementary school. Those who are mentored are fifth grade girls who have chosen to participate in this program. Each group is made up of approximately 30 girls and six adult mentors. A mentor coordinates each session while a school counselor is available on the premises if help is needed
THE CURRICULUM
This nine week program focuses on the development of life skills. To accomplish this the girls participate in discussions and experiential exercises.
Each participant receives a T-shirt featuring a Women In Action logo.
A field trip to a fine restaurant allows the girls to practice skills learned.
The program ends with a farewell celebration during which the fifth grade girls practice their
newly learned social skills, receive a photo of themselves with the friends that they have made during the session.
They also receive a completion certificate, flowers and a share BIG cake.
TRAINING
Training includes information about the mentoring curriculum, guidelines for communication with fifth-grade girls
and participation policies of the Vancouver School District and Women In Action.
During the session we always welcome input and feedback.
September is the month to bring your travel sized
